Andy Frankham has been writing since he was in
High School (or Secondary, as it was called 'back in them days'),
when he used to write short stories for his English assignments.
His favourite teacher's remark has always been, 'I liked this
in a crazy sort of way. Three stories in one, really!', which
to him means an early recognition and understanding of the need
for sub-plots.
He first got an inkling that he wanted to write
for Doctor Who in 1988, during the 25th year of the original
series. The following year he pitched an idea to the BBC, but
as his bad fortune would have it, it coincided with the closure
of the Doctor Who Office, but he did receive a letter from
Andrew Cartmel telling him to resubmit the idea when the Office
reopened. (Ever since the new series got commissioned he's been
wondering if he should be pitch an idea to Russell Davies, and
tell him that Cartmel sent him!)
Since then he's been writing, first as a hobby,
and finally with a mission to be a published author. This has
included many pitches to several publishers (Virgin Publishing,
BBC Books, Orion Books, and Telos Publishing amongst them) since
1996 when, after breaking his ankle and faced with lots of free
time, he finally got his act together and wrote his first book.
The book was unsuccessful, but it did not deter him.
He has written two short stories published as
part of Big Finish's Short Trips anthologies, and co-authored
an audio script for Noise Monster Production's Space 1889
series with Richard Dinnick. He is also the Range Editor and creator
of The Legacy, an ongoing series of free online Doctor
Who fiction.
At 33 years of age, he is mostly happy with his
lot in life.
